These three articles all talk about integrating new literacies effectively into teaching to assist student learning. The first article talks about the new literacies of digital and media technologies. The internet has changed the life and study of students significantly. Nevertheless, integrating new literacies into classrooms are not easy. Challenges include unpreparedness for technologies, lack of resources, limited knowledge and schools, lack of school planning, attitudes and believes of teachers, etc. The second article talks about the importance of learning new literacy for students in the 21 st century. It emphasizes the importance of teachers, parents, school administrators, policymakers and researchers in advocating new literacies. The third article mentions the changes in society that new literacies become important and necessary. The social forces like economic competition, public polices, all prompt the importance of learning new literacies. 

For this Learning task, I interviewed an ELA teacher in the Primary School. He makes use of iPad, computers, and prezi during teaching. iPad allows students to play online games interactively which can help them memorize words and phrases. Computers allow them to create presentations so that they can communicate within groups better. Prezi allows students to share their work for peer review. This allows them to realize their strengths and weaknesses. He said that the challenge in integrating technology in thE teaching of ELA comes from two sides. The first is the school side. The equipment in schools must be able to follow up. The second challenge from the acceptability of parents. Many parents think that the use of ipad and computers make the learning like playing, which they deem as bad. 

Describe  your understanding of the 5 essential  components: The five essential components refer to reading, writing, speaking, listening and language. The standards for reading focus on the ability to read texts, making connections, reasoning in the texts. The writing standards focus more on the connection between reading and writing. This includes outline, writing, editing and final publishing various kinds of essays. The component of speaking and listening focuses on the communication among students. Finally, the language component focuses on the comprehensive understanding of vocabulary and conversations in both non-academic and academic settings. 

After watching the video on Common Core for ELA and Literacy video, I have a better understand about Common Core. The common Core standards are the expectations for students after they reached certain grades or after they have taken certain lessons and courses. The four categories of the common core standards set expectations on different skills of students, including reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Each category sets up different standards for different levels, starting from pre-kindergarten. These standards can help teachers to design their courses accordingly. In this way, teachers have better understanding of what the students should master at certain grade.
