Week 12 Glogster
After creating a glogster account and explore
how to use it in general, I think this is a very useful technology to be
applied in classroom. Glogster allows the design of a presentation or poster with
multimedia sources, such as words, pictures, videos, and audios. This can be
both used by students and teachers. To use it in educational context, in
particular ELA, I think teachers can design a poster that integrate audios and
videos to teach students new vocabularies. For example, if teachers want to teach
the words like tadpoles, froglet, frog, they can insert a video showing the life
cycle of a frog followed by an image to ask students to match the word with the
picture.
To access the affordance of Glogster, the following
is considered:
Accessibility: glogster is readily
available to both teachers and students as long as there are Internet
connections. It is accessed via websites as well as mobile apps.
Speed of change: the information of the
world changes rapidly. But on Glogster. One can easily revise the posters and
the presentations to adapt the new changes and knowledge into them for future
use.
Diversity: Glogster is diverse in
multimedia sources, such as images and videos. It allows students and educators
to experience beyond their own communities to view others’ work.
Communication and collaboration: Glogster
helps develop new communities and new ways of online communicating and sharing.
Reflection: for now, Glogster do not
generate too much spam information to overwhelm users.
Multimodal and non-linear: Glogster is a
web-based learning. It offers non-linear learning by allowing students to focus
on what they need to improve. It utilizes multimodes in teaching.
Risk, fragility, and uncertainty: There may
be some risks and uncertainty associated with Glogster. Since it is an online
tool for learning. Students may surf the internet during learning which distracts
them away.
Immediacy: Glogster can be exchanged via
web quickly.
Surveillance: the monitoring function of
Glogster is limited. Teachers can ask students to interact on it. But it is a
bit difficult to monitor their real learning time and efforts.
In support of your views I believe Glogster is an ideal tech tool to get students engaged in many subject areas. I also thing that the many templates are good features because they enable students to upload pictures and add texts. In discussions with other teachers some expressed the fear that these programs could allow intrusion of inappropriate materials. I believe however that teachers should monitor students while they use these webs 2.0 tools.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your view on the uses of Glogster in the classroom, especially its use as an interactive poster. The example you mentioned on showing the life cycle of a frig is an good example of how you can use Glogster to make learning a topic interesting. Its also a great reference for students to look back a teacher created glog for information about the topic instead of reading boring information from a textbook.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Glosgster can be a benefit in the classroom. True, how you mentioned glogs can be changed over time to keep up with changes in information. I too wonder about the use of glogster with students and they decide to get off topic and surf the web.
